The If Then Else Conditional Story Item is arguably the most powerful item in the Story Item Toolbox.  It allows your Story check on Conditions, and then act accordingly to run other Story Items if those conditions are met or not.

IF Conditions are met, THEN run Story Items, ELSE run Story Items.

IF Conditions is a list of Condition Items (See Condition Items available), which you can add by clicking on the green ‘plus’ icon within this section.

This brings up the Choose Condition Toolbox on the right.

The THEN, and ELSE sections allow you to add other Story Items, which will be run if the Conditions are met or not.  Clicking on the green ‘plus’ icon in these sections will bring up the Story Item toolbox where you can select the Story Items you wish to place in these items.

There is no limit to the number of nested conditions or Story Items you place here.

For example, you may multiple If Then Else Story Items within each other to perform more complex logic.

Sometimes you may wish your Story to loop through a number of things and perform an action on each of those things.  This is where the For Each Loop Story Item comes into play.

Clicking on the green ‘plus’ icon in the FOR EACH section will bring up the Data Item toolbox where you can select the data you wish to loop through.

For example: Let's say you wish to loop through all open positions on an account and close them. You can achieve this by getting all of the open positions and looping through them to close each one of them individually.

Sometimes you may wish to abort a Story Run so that any further actions in your story are not executed.  You can achieve this by using the Abort Story item.

You can see the message defined here in any story logs.  If you wish to change the message displayed in logs, simply click on the message to edit it.

Logging out messages to your Log console is useful when you are building and testing your strategies.  It also gives you the ability to see more information about certain variables and details as your stories are running.  

The Log Message Story Item gives you the ability to send to the Log console any Data Item available.

Clicking on the green ‘plus’ icons brings up the options of which Data Items you can select.

Every time a story runs it has its own Context.  This is a mechanism of allowing the story to execute and be aware of any data it accesses or changes.

The Set Context Story Item allows you to save a value in the current story context, that other story Items can have access to if they wish. 

, if your story requires access to your account balance multiple times within the same story, it will be more efficient to get your account balance one time, save it, and refer to it directly.  That way TradeStory only has to access your broker one time to get the information it needs to run quickly, rather than having to wait for your broker to send account information multiple times.  The example below gets the balance, saves it to context and shows an example of referring to this context to log out the balance.

 setting Context data does not store the value long term - the context only ‘lives’ as long as the story runs.  If you wish to store and refer to data/variables for longer term access or cross-story data storage, please refer to

Set Context

Run Story allows your current story to run another story.

Selecting a story here brings up the Story Picker, allowing you to select a story from any of your strategies to run.

By clicking on the Run Story title, you can set the name of this item.  It’s also possible to select 

 is not selected, meaning that the current Story Item will wait for the target story to run completely before continuing its own execution. If 

 is selected, then the target story will run in the background, and the current story item will not wait for it to finish executing.

Running Stories asynchronously (in the background) is useful if you are using one story to manage many others.  An example is if you have a master story, that needs to execute trading stories on many other accounts at the same time, without having to wait for them to all process 1 after the other.

Cancel All Pending Orders allows you to cancel all pending orders on an account, optionally specifying only orders for specific symbols

Click on the green ‘plus’ icon in the ACCOUNT section to bring up the account selection toolbox.  Click on an account to select it.

You can add 1 or more optional SYMBOLS to filter the action on by clicking on the green ‘plus’ icon in the SYMBOLS section.

Close Positions will close all open positions on an account, optionally with specific Symbols to narrow down the action of closing positions to only specific symbols.

Close a position by its reference (set previously by a new order).

Close a position partially by its reference (set previously with 

item).  For example, when you wish to take partial profits from an open position, or when you wish to take half the risk of the table.

By clicking on the Close Position Partial item title, you can bring up the settings for this item.

Here you can configure how you want to handle the partial closing options.

 The name of your story item (you can change this if you need to see something else in your logs).

 Position Reference (default) allows you to specify the reference you set when opening the position (New Order).  Position ID is used when this item is used in a FOR EACH LOOP Story Item.

 You can specify the units you wish to close.  Percentage (default) or Absolute.  Use Absolute if you wish to close a specific lot size or specific contract number in your position.

 Default 2 decimal places when sending partial close.  When performing Percentage Units, sometimes it is necessary to round the volume to a specific number of decimals for certain brokers to accept the order.

 If you wish the story item to execute the order in the background asynchronously, select this check box.  Default is unselected.

To select an account, click on the green ‘plus’ icon in the ACCOUNT section.  This brings up the Account Selection toolbox.  Click on an account in the list to select an account.

Close Position Partial

New Order Story Item is where any new orders are configured and executed within TradeStory.  This is a sophisticated item that allows for many different order types and configurations.

By default, when adding this item, it sets up a basic market buy order, which you can configure from there.

By clicking on the Order Type (in this case BUY MARKET), it brings up the order configuration toolbox on the right where you can change order types, add stop loss/take profit, and trailing stops.

Order Type: There are many different types of order depending on your broker.  TradeStory attempts to standardize these order types and provides you with the same interface when building strategies across multiple brokers and accounts.  You have Market Buy/Sell, Limit Buy/Sell, Stop Buy/Sell order types.  

(note) - we are adding other types coming soon - OCO (one cancels the other).

 configuration to your order by selecting the checkboxes.  You can also select a more complex trailing stop loss configuration if you wish also.

 Select this if you want the order to be executed in the background without your story item waiting for it to finish executing.

When selecting a stop loss or take profit in the options, you have the option to configure using a number of different units.

 (sl/tp at specific price value in relation to current price)

 (sl/tp at specific number of pips distance in relation to current price)

 (sl/tp at specific number of points distance in relation to current price)

 (sl/tp set at distance where the size of your trade results in % of balance risk).

The selected configuration sections will be added to your Order story item as value Data Items where you can enter the value directly here or refer to other data Items:

When TradeStory places an order, if you wish to modify it or close it later using other Story Items, you must set a reference for the order so that you can identify it later.  This can be set in the REFERENCE section of the order item.

By clicking on the green ‘plus’ icon in the STOP LOSS or TAKE PROFIT section, you can refer to other type of data items.

For example, if your Story is running in response to a Webhook received from Tradingview that contains specific data about where your stop loss should be set you can refer to Webhook data in the STOPLOSS section:

By default, when selecting a trailing stop configuration, TradeStory adds a basic 20 point relative trailing stop, which you can configure from there.  By clicking on the Distance title, you can setup more advanced settings.

 stop works in exactly the same way as a fixed stop in its Units - except that it will trail with live price movements by the number of units you specify.

 When selected allows you to set up different thresholds (or steps) to allow for more complex trailing rules.

The Trailing Stop section of your story item will change to allow you to add any number of steps.

To add more steps, click on the pink ‘plus’ icon.  You can remove steps by clicking on the pink ‘trash bin’ icon.

New Order

Modify Position Story Item works in the exact same way as the New Order Story Item, where you can set any of the same configurations - except this action will modify an already open position by its reference.

Clicking on the Modify Position item title brings up the options allowing you to set/change Stop Loss, Take Profit, and Trailing Stops.

Modify Pending Order allows you to modify an order that is pending any fills (typically limit or stop orders).  This story item requires a reference to be provided, which was previously set using the New Order story item.  TradeStory will find the pending order with your reference and make changes to its price, stop loss, takeprofit and trailing stops if required.

To access all order details to set, click on the Modify Pending Order item title to open the settings toolbox.

To move a stop loss for a position to break even you can use the Break Even Position Story Item.

 Enter your position reference (previously set in your New Order Story Item).

Click on the Break Even Position item title to bring up the settings.

Reference By: Position Reference (default) for TradeStory to use your provided position reference. Or Position ID when you are using this within a FOR EACH LOOP, and TradeStory can then use the broker’s own position id instead.

Disable Strategy Story Item disables a specific strategy from running any more stories or accepting any more webhooks or scheduled events.  

Click on the green ‘plus’ icon to bring up the Strategy Selection toolbox where you can select the strategy you wish to disable when this story item runs.

An example of where you might wish to use this Story Item is where you are writing a strategy to manage other strategies.

To enable a strategy that is currently Disabled, you can use the Enable Strategy Story Item.

Click on the green ‘plus’ icon to bring up the Strategy Selection toolbox where you can select the strategy you wish to enable when this story item runs.

Sometimes you do not want to disable a strategy indefinitely. Mostly you may find that you only wish to disable a strategy for a period of time.  This is where you can use the Pause Strategy Story Item.

This allows you to specify an amount of time for a strategy to be disabled for (paused).  TradeStory will automatically unpause the strategy when the time you specify has passed.

Click on the green ‘plus’ icon to bring up the Strategy Selection toolbox where you can select the strategy you wish to pause when this story item runs.

Click on the Until: timing option to specify a time when to unpause the strategy.

Here you can specify Timezone, and Pause Until.

The strategy will be unpaused at the start of the next day (relative to when the story was executed).

The strategy will be unpaused at the start of next week  (relative to when the story was executed).

 If you select Relative Pause Until, you can specify a more detailed time relative to when the story is executed to unpause the strategy.

 I wish to pause my strategy until tomorrow if there are high impact economic events happening today.

 for more information on Strategy Variables.  Strategy Variables are pieces of information that your stories can set and refer to in their executions.

This story item lets your story set the value of a Strategy Variable.

Firstly you must provide the VARIABLE NAME of your variable, by clicking on the Variable Name title.

You can enter the name of your variable that you are saving a value to.  If the variable does not exist, TradeStory creates it for you.  If the variable already exists, the value will be updated to the value you provide.

The VALUE section accepts any Data Item, which can access any data source (like account balance) or just plain value you set in your story.

 Optional - by default when setting a variable, TradeStory assumes you are setting a variable on the same strategy as the Story.  If you wish to interact with variables on other Strategies, then you can click on the green ‘plus’ icon in the STRATEGY section to select the strategy.

 You might wish to make a Schedule that runs a story to set a daily_starting_balance at the start of each day (on a schedule) and saves it to the Strategy Variable starting_balance so that other stories can refer to it when calculating trading size or risk against current balance.

A story item that, when executed, will send a message to a specific channel on a discord server.  Great if you wish to publish signals to a group of people from your strategies.

Send an email message containing information you provide in your Story Item.  For example, send an email with details of a new position order.  Or Send a snapshot of open positions as an email report on a specific daily schedule.

A story item that, when executed, will send a message to a specific channel on a slack account.  Great if you wish to publish signals to a group of people from your strategies or keep yourself notified when you are working from mobile.

A Story Item that, when executed, will send a HTTP/S request to a specific external API with a data payload you specify in the Story Item.  This will allow for more technical users to integrate their own 3rd Party API integrations into TradeStory.
